Skylanders Superchargers Revealed! All We Know
Yesterday was one busy day lots of images and gameplay videos have popped up everywhere. I have to say that I am rather excited to see what Skylanders Superchargers brings to the table. The figures look amazing! I would say that they are probably the best looking figures thus far, which is a + for me. Adding a playable element to the vehicles is also a nice touch younger kids will go crazy with articulation being thrown into the mix. Visually it looks great! The gameplay footage that has surfaced has me ready to get my drive on, but am I the only one feeling like I need more? Before I go crazy with my thoughts here is a break down of everything I know so far thanks to the press release sent to me from Activision, who by the way also provided all the images you see in the article as well.
Skylanders SuperChargers features a brand-new class of heroes, called SuperChargers who are distinct with fresh moves, powerful attacks and all-new weapons. These SuperChargers also have special in-game abilities that help Portal Masters fight Kaos. Twenty new SuperChargers character toys and 20 new vehicle toys will be available.
So it looks like we will have a total of 40 new toys to add to our ever-growing collections. The new vehicle toys have replaced the Trap crystals this go around. Which leaves me and most of you with a pretty big question what happened to the Traps? Can we still use them? Well according to the release all 300+ toys are compatible, but it doesn’t say anything specifically about the traps.
Players will have the ability to customize all vehicles in-game with super cool modifications and upgradeable weapons. For the ultimate gameplay experience, players can pair a SuperCharger Skylander with its signature vehicle to create a SuperCharged combination, unlocking an exclusive mod that revs up the performance of both the vehicle and character. Not only are the vehicles playable in the game, but also many feature moving parts, making them fun to play with outside of the game. Additionally, Skylanders SuperChargers supports all 300+ Skylanders toys from previous games, enabling all Skylanders characters to pilot land, sea or sky-based vehicles.
Unfortunately the Traps are not used as they are in Trap Team they are instead magic items used to super charge your vehicles. I think this is a big bummer, but I can see the reasoning. I would have loved to trap new villains or use the trapped villains in the new game some how (insert sad face here) at least we get Skystones of them right?
The game’s storyline focuses on Kaos’ latest attempt to rule Skylands. In his efforts to take down the Skylanders, Kaos has unleashed his most sinister weapon ever – a massive “Doomstation of Ultimate Doomstruction” capable of eating the sky itself! Fortunately, Master Eon has seen the warning signs and assembled a special team of Skylanders to pilot an unstoppable fleet of land, sea and sky vehicles with the power to travel through the reign of destruction to stop Kaos!
At the helm of powerful, tricked-out land, sea and sky vehicles, Portal Masters can engage in a high-octane action-adventure videogame like never before. Kids can speed across Skylands’ roads in vehicular combat, race down roaring rapids and engage in aerial dogfights as they barrel-roll through enemy swarms for the first time. Developed by Vicarious Visions, Skylanders SuperChargers offers a rich story-driven gameplay experience, filled with vehicle-based and on-foot adventures, combat, puzzles, mini games, activities and platforming, set within a variety of all-new compelling environments.
The storyline seems interesting Kaos is back at it as usual and he isn’t alone according to the article I read over at Polygon. They got a chance to see a walk through demo of the game with Vicarious Visions Senior Executive Producer David Nathanielsz. Check out the article and read more about their experience.
The Skylanders need to retrieve the Thunderous Bolt, which is located in the Cloud Kingdom. But the ruler of the area, Lord Stratosfear, has made a deal with Kaos, so our heroes will need to defeat Kaos’ forces to secure the item they’re seeking.
The Cloud Kingdom lives up to its name, with thick mist obscuring much of the area and dissipating as you walk through it. You’ll have to blow on storm horns placed throughout the level to clear the clouds away.
It’s a beautiful place, evoking the utopias of antiquity with verdant terraces, hanging gardens and Ionic columns. And the dialogue is written in the vein of the best cartoons, with references and commentary that will fly over kids’ heads. The people of the Cloud Kingdom are the one-percenters of the Skylands. One character notes that Lord Stratosfear “never trusted the underclass” before quickly stating, “No offense to you, of course.” After you’ve cleaned up the level, that same individual says you’re “a credit to your people.”
Yes! Another villain, don’t get me wrong I love kicking some Kaos butt, but it nice to see another villain maybe we will have to defeat him as well I for one wouldn’t mind knocking Lord Stratosfear out of the stratosphere! On another note it seems Toys R Us will once again be the place to find the best selection of Skylanders merchandise.
“Since first partnering with Activision to bring the original Skylanders® Spyro’s Adventure to our stores, we have believed whole-heartedly in the magic and innovation of this brand, as well as the company’s ability to re-imagine and redefine play experiences with the toys-to-life concept,” said Richard Barry, Global Chief Merchandising Officer, Toys”R”Us, Inc. “With each new introduction, Activision never disappoints its highly loyal fans of the franchise, and we are thrilled to continue to offer the broadest assortment of all Skylanders® merchandise, including the newly introduced Skylanders SuperChargers.”
I haven’t been disappointed in the past with much besides how well shelves have been stocked, yet that still hasn’t hurt this franchise. In the beginning just about every major big box retailer had jumped on the Skylanders train. We could find them pretty much anywhere there where variants galore. Now it seems that the only stores that keep them stocked or is in the chase race is Target and TRU with Walmart trying to stay in the race but is falling way behind. So my question is will we see more stores carrying the figures and game again? Will we have more variants, chase figures, etc. this go around?
This year there is so much competition in the Toys to Life category it is enough to make one get dizzy with all the new games, apps, etc. I have been wondering how Activision is feeling about the competition especially with how well Amiibos have been doing and the LEGO brand stepping into the ring. Well it doesn’t seem like they are to concerned as they are the creators and leaders of the genre, which they kindly reiterate every chance they get.
“We created the toys-to-life category and have continued to lead it by bringing new innovations and new magic to the genre with each and every game. First we brought action figures to life, and now we’re bringing vehicles to life with Skylanders SuperChargers,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “We love making these games because in order to do it well, you have to constantly tap into your inner kid. What kid hasn’t imagined epic vehicles with amazing powers and dreamed about the adventures they could have with them? Skylanders SuperChargers makes those dreams real.”
I like how they are now trying to brand “vehicles to life” with this new release. It has me wondering what else we can expect Activision and it’s companies to bring to life? I will say one of the things that has kept Skylanders around is the way it appeals to children. They have a formula that has been working for quite some time now cater to the kids and they will come, but I wonder what happens when those kids grow up and want there favorite Skylanders to grow with them? Will we get a more edgy game then? One that caters to not only children, but older collectors and gamers as well?
We can expect to see the game released on every platform as it has been in the past, but the game experience will be different for Wii and 3DS players.
Fans can pre-order Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs beginning on June 3 at select retail destinations worldwide for the suggested retail price of $74.99 in North America, which includes two new Skylanders characters, a first-of-its kind Skylanders vehicle, newly designed Portal of Power®+ and the full AAA game. Skylanders SuperChargers will be available on Xbox 360™ and Xbox One™video game and entertainment systems from Microsoft, PlayStation® 3 and PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment systems, Nintendo’s Wii U™ system, and a different, unique adventure will be made available on Nintendo’s Wii™ system and the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system. Additionally, the complete Skylanders SuperChargers experience will be available on iPad®. The game will be available on September 20 in North America, September 24 in Australia/New Zealand; and on September 25 in Europe.
Has anyone else noticed the game is coming out in September as opposed to the regular October release date? I suppose the decision was made to compete with all the other Toys To Life games coming out. Although the full experience was only mentioned for iPad I assume it will also be available for Andriod at some point as well (fingers crossed). I know some of you are annoyed that there is another portal being introduced, but don’t fret there is good news thanks again to the article from Polygon.
For the first time Activision is offering a digital Portal Owners Pack for those of you that don’t want to purchase another portal. The pack will include in-game versions of Hot Streak and Super Shot Stealth Elf, and of course a downloadable version of the game for only $49.99, which I think is pretty cool having the option to buy or not buy the new portal. I wonder what the Wii and 3DS storyline will be like? Is Beenox again behind the wheel on these versions? I think they did a good job with Trap Team so I’m curious to know if they were given another shot.
Now here is something that should have you all jumping for joy! According to the Best Buy pre-order link we will finally be getting an on-line experience! Check out the image below thanks to Ziotec for the heads up!
I am over excited to be able to play online with all of you I’ll share all my gamer tags so that we can stay connected when the game gets closer to release. We now have a better understanding of what to expect with the release, but I still have a few questions. For instance will there be another Dark Starter Pack and who will be included? How many figures will there be per element? Even though dark and light elements are not in the new logo they are in the background of the image so we know they will be included, but will Knightmare and Knightlight return? Will we get reposes of Blacklight and Spotlight? I guess we will just have to wait and see. The HDR Room always puts together awesome Skylanders articles and they recently posted a 4 pt preview full of images and info check it out here.
I think I have covered just about everything up until this point I hope you all have gotten your fill. What questions do you have? Sound off in the comments section or on our social media accounts. I would love to hear what you all are thinking. When I find out more details, which I’m sure we will get a bunch of juicy stuff at E3, I will do an update post to keep us all in the loop. Can’t wait to pre-order your copy? Get it right here. If you haven’t seen the promo video featuring Travis Pastrana; which I don’t know why it’s everywhere! Check it out below.
